Yorkshire and the Humber

Scrapping a car in Yorkshire and the Humber

Pennine cities in the west, dales and moors in the middle, and the Humber estuary in the east: Yorkshire is three landscapes, and the scrapping process works across all of them.

Start in the west, where the M62 climbs over the Pennines from Lancashire and drops into the West Yorkshire towns: Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford, Wakefield and Leeds, all built close together on hillsides. Expect the car to be on a steep terraced street.

South Yorkshire runs from Sheffield through Rotherham and Barnsley to Doncaster, linked by the M1 and M18.

York sits in the middle, with the A64 and the A1237 outer ring road around it and a walled centre where parking is scarce. Harrogate and Ripon lie to the north-west along the A61, and Scarborough and Bridlington face the North Sea.

Clean air zones in Bradford and Sheffield

Both cities run Class C Clean Air Zones. Non-compliant taxis, vans, buses and lorries pay; private cars are exempt. That makes the zones especially relevant to anyone retiring an older diesel van or a private hire car.

Dales, moors and the coast

North Yorkshire is England’s largest county by area and largely rural. Cars in the Dales or on the North York Moors may be parked at a farm or a cottage up a gated track, so tell the buyer about gates, cattle grids and any tight turns.

Across the Humber

East of York, the A63 and M62 lead to Hull, and the Humber Bridge links it with North Lincolnshire, Scunthorpe and Grimsby. These south-bank towns belong to the same region and are handled in exactly the same way. Payment is never cash.

Questions

Scrapping a car in Yorkshire and the Humber

Straight answers to what people ask before scrapping a car.

How will I know the car has been scrapped properly?

You receive a CoD from the facility that dismantles it, and the DVLA is informed. Keep the certificate for your records.

My car is on a steep street with no off-road parking. Is that a problem?

Usually not. Collectors deal with hills and on-street parking regularly. Mention it, and whether the car can be steered and its handbrake works.

Is there a charge for collection?

No. Collection is free wherever the car is in the UK, there are no admin or hidden fees, and turning down an offer costs nothing.

Do you collect from anywhere?

Yes: a home, a workplace, a garage, a car park or the roadside. Use the postcode where the car is, not your home address.
