North West

North West scrap car collection

Two big conurbations, a motorway spine and the Lake District make the North West one of the most varied regions to retire a car in.

What is the quickest way to understand this region? Follow the M6. It enters from Staffordshire near Crewe, passes Warrington, Wigan, Preston and Lancaster, skirts the Lake District at Kendal and leaves for Scotland just past Carlisle. Almost everything else hangs off it.

To the west sit Liverpool and the Wirral; to the east, Greater Manchester inside its M60 orbital. The M55 branches off to Blackpool and the Fylde coast, and the M65 runs through Blackburn and Burnley to the edge of the Pennines.

No charging zone in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester’s clean air plan, approved by the government in January 2025, is investment-led and does not include a charging Clean Air Zone. No one pays a daily charge to drive a private car in the city region, so scrapping here is about the car itself: its MOT, its repairs or its damage.

Mersey crossings and the Wirral

Liverpool and the Wirral are linked by the Queensway and Kingsway tunnels, and Runcorn and Widnes by the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges. None of this affects the process, because the buyer allocated to you already works that side of the river.

Cumbria and the Lakes

Further north, the A66, A590 and A595 serve Penrith, Barrow-in-Furness and the west coast. Lakeland lanes are narrow, and cars are often kept at the back of a farm or holiday cottage. Describe the access when the phone call comes, and pick a day that works for you.

Questions

Scrapping a car in North West

Straight answers to what people ask before scrapping a car.

Can’t see your question? Read every answer or call 0800 058 8087.

The car is on SORN. Does that change anything?

No. SORN vehicles are accepted, and the car is collected from wherever it is kept, so it never needs to be driven on the road.

Can a car with no MOT be collected from a street in Manchester?

Yes. A car with no MOT can be collected by a licensed carrier on a recovery vehicle, whether it is on the street or on a driveway.

Is there a charge for collection?

No. Collection is free wherever the car is in the UK, there are no admin or hidden fees, and turning down an offer costs nothing.

Do you collect from anywhere?

Yes: a home, a workplace, a garage, a car park or the roadside. Use the postcode where the car is, not your home address.
