East of England
Half of this region commutes into London and the other half farms some of the flattest land in Britain, and a scrap car can turn up in either.
South of a line from Bedford to Colchester, the East of England is commuter country. Watford, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Luton sit along the M1 and M25; Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City are planned towns on the A1(M); Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend face London down the A12, A127 and A13.
North of it, the picture changes. Fenland around Ely and King’s Lynn, the Norfolk Broads and the Suffolk coast are open and thinly populated, and a car past its useful life may be parked in a farmyard, a barn or at the end of an unmade track.
Rural collections are often easier than they sound. Lorries with winches regularly work farm lanes, but they do need firm ground and room to turn. If the car is on grass, or the track floods in winter, say so when the buyer calls and agree a sensible spot near a hard surface.
In the towns the usual question is access to a shared car park or a garage block, and a quick note about barriers or bollards helps. In Cambridge, where many streets are narrow and residents’ parking is common, the same applies.
The A14 joins Felixstowe and Ipswich to Cambridge and on to the Midlands, and with the A11 and A47 it ties Norfolk and Suffolk to the rest of the network. Offers come from whichever licensed buyer works your part of the region; a Lowestoft car is not quoted for from Hertfordshire.
