Glasgow scrap car collection, inside and outside the LEZ

Glasgow was the first Scottish city to enforce a Low Emission Zone, and for owners of older diesels the question is often whether to keep driving or to scrap.

Start with the registration and the postcode where the car is.

The M8 runs straight through the middle of Glasgow and crosses the Clyde on the Kingston Bridge, a sign of how much room this city made for the motorway. South of the river, the M74 and M77 bring traffic in from Lanarkshire and Ayrshire, and the Clyde Tunnel links Govan with Partick and Whiteinch.

Away from the motorways, much of Glasgow lives in tenements. In Dennistoun, Govanhill, Partick and Shawlands, several floors of flats share one street frontage, and parking is scarce in the evenings. A car that fails its MOT outside a close can sit there for weeks. Tell the buyer the street and which side the car is on, and the collection can be arranged around it.

What the Low Emission Zone means for an older car

Glasgow’s LEZ covers the city centre, bounded by the M8 to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south and Saltmarket and High Street to the east. The motorway itself is not part of it. Enforcement for all vehicles began on 1 June 2023, and residents inside the zone had until 1 June 2024.

Under the Scottish standard, petrol cars generally need to meet Euro 4 and diesels Euro 6. There is no daily fee to pay instead: cameras pick up a non-compliant car, a penalty charge notice goes to the registered keeper, and repeat entries cost more. For owners of older diesels who drive into town often, recycling the car can be the practical answer.

From quote to collection

Begin with the car’s plate and the G postcode of the street it is on, whether in G31, G42 or G51. A buyer licensed to cover the city sends an offer. If you take it, the car is uplifted free at a slot you pick, and the ATF that receives it supplies your Certificate of Destruction.

How it works

Scrapping a car in Glasgow, start to finish

Four stages take an unwanted car from your drive to a new life as recycled material. Here’s what happens at each one.

  1. 1

    Value

Enter the registration and the postcode where the car is parked. The details go to a licensed buyer who covers that area, and they come back with an offer.

  2. 2

    Collect

Agree the offer and pick a day. The car is collected free of charge from a drive, a street, a car park or a garage, wherever it happens to be.

  3. 3

    Scrap

The car goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility, where fluids, the battery and hazardous parts are removed safely and the paperwork is completed.

  4. 4

    Recycle

Reusable parts are recovered, and the shell is shredded so the steel, aluminium and other materials can be made into something new.

Questions

Glasgow questions

Straight answers to what people ask before scrapping a car.

Can’t see your question? Read every answer or call 0800 058 8087.

Will a diesel that fails the LEZ standard still be uplifted?

Yes. The LEZ governs driving in the zone, and your car does not need to be driven anywhere for collection. Non-runners are accepted.

Is the rest of Greater Glasgow covered?

Yes. Paisley, Clydebank, Rutherglen, East Kilbride and the surrounding towns are included, and the service runs across Scotland.

Is there a charge for collection?

No. Collection is free wherever the car is in the UK, there are no admin or hidden fees, and turning down an offer costs nothing.

Will I be paid in cash?

No. Since the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, scrap metal dealers in England and Wales can't pay cash for scrap vehicles. Payment is made by bank transfer or another traceable method.
