Aberdeen’s grey granite gives its streets a uniform look, from the long terraces of Rosemount and Ferryhill to the post-war housing at Mastrick and Northfield. Much of the older housing has no driveway, so cars stay on the street all year, through hard winters and the damp air off the North Sea.
Since February 2019 the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route has carried much of the through traffic around the west of the city, running from north of Stonehaven to Blackdog. Inside it, the A96 heads out past Bucksburn and Dyce towards the airport and Inverurie, and the A93 follows the Dee towards Cults and Banchory. A car that no longer starts in Torry or Tillydrone can be collected just as easily as one on a driveway in Bridge of Don.
Aberdeen’s LEZ covers part of the city centre, bounded roughly by Schoolhill and Skene Street to the north, Willowbank Road to the south and the A956 to the east. The railway and bus stations sit outside it. Enforcement started on 1 June 2024, two years after the zone was introduced.
As elsewhere in Scotland, the national standard applies: Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4 for petrol, or a penalty follows. If an older diesel is the only car in the house and you work in the centre, that can tip the decision towards scrapping.
Type in the car’s registration along with its postcode, from AB10 near the Bridge of Dee to AB24 in Old Aberdeen. A licensed north-east buyer will usually be in touch within the hour. Collection costs nothing, and an Authorised Treatment Facility recycles the car.

How it works
Four stages take an unwanted car from your drive to a new life as recycled material. Here’s what happens at each one.
Enter the registration and the postcode where the car is parked. The details go to a licensed buyer who covers that area, and they come back with an offer.
Agree the offer and pick a day. The car is collected free of charge from a drive, a street, a car park or a garage, wherever it happens to be.
The car goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility, where fluids, the battery and hazardous parts are removed safely and the paperwork is completed.
Reusable parts are recovered, and the shell is shredded so the steel, aluminium and other materials can be made into something new.
