Nottingham · East Midlands
Nottingham has spent over a decade nudging commuters out of cars and onto trams. If yours has become surplus, or simply worn out, it can be scrapped through a licensed buyer for NG postcodes.

In April 2012 Nottingham introduced the UK’s only Workplace Parking Levy. Employers with eleven or more parking spaces for staff pay it, and the money has gone into the tram lines and other public transport. The result is a city where plenty of people commute without a car, and a second car at home can easily become surplus.
Nottingham’s boundary is also tight. Beeston, West Bridgford, Arnold and Hucknall are separate towns in the county, so the city itself is mainly inner suburbs: terraces in Sneinton, Hyson Green and Lenton, the larger estates of Clifton, Bestwood and Aspley, and roomier roads in Wollaton and Mapperley. The county towns around the edge are collected from in exactly the same way.
The Trent divides the city, with Clifton Bridge carrying the A52 over it to the M1-bound roads. The A6514 forms a ring through the western and northern suburbs, past the Queen’s Medical Centre, and the A610 runs out to junction 26. Collections cover both banks and everywhere from The Meadows to Bulwell, with Beeston and West Bridgford just beyond the boundary. The collector agrees a time with you, so you never have to drive it anywhere.
In Lenton and Radford, close to the University of Nottingham, rows of shared student houses mean cars parked bumper to bumper. Nottingham Trent University adds more cars in the centre and Clifton. If you are leaving a house with a car that has failed its MOT, arrange collection before you go, rather than leaving it on the street for neighbours to worry about.
For any car on a narrow street, mention whether the engine turns over and whether the front is accessible, so the right recovery vehicle comes and loading is quick.

How it works
Four stages take an unwanted car from your drive to a new life as recycled material. Here’s what happens at each one.
Enter the registration and the postcode where the car is parked. The details go to a licensed buyer who covers that area, and they come back with an offer.
Agree the offer and pick a day. The car is collected free of charge from a drive, a street, a car park or a garage, wherever it happens to be.
The car goes to an Authorised Treatment Facility, where fluids, the battery and hazardous parts are removed safely and the paperwork is completed.
Reusable parts are recovered, and the shell is shredded so the steel, aluminium and other materials can be made into something new.
